Accessibility
Among the goals I had set for myself in web site restructuring is to make this site very accessible. My last site was accessible, but there was a lot that I didn't implement until now.
This site contains a variety of accessibility enhancements enumerated below:
- The navigation on each page is located at the bottom of the mark up. There is no need for a skip navigation link because navigation is last.
- There is a skip to navigation link provided at the top of each page, and at the top of the sidebar.
- link elements are in place to alert compatible browsers of some additional navigation resources. The links are page specific, and there isn't always a previous, next, or up link, however, links to the home page, the site map, and this accessibilty statement that you are reading now are found on each page.
- Access Keys have been assigned to the navigation, and other helpful page. Access Key assignments have not been standardized, though I've implemented common assignments. This site's access keys are as follows:
- 0: accessibility statement
- 1: home page
- 3: site map
- 4: search field
- 9: contact me
- n: navigation
- a: art
- g: genealogy
- m: more
- Headlines are set to semantically reflect their meaning and demonstrate a page's internal hierarchy.
- The site's content is entirely written in plain text. All graphic ornamentation is added with style sheets and does not interfere with text-only browsers and screen readers.
- alt and title attributes are complete and descriptive of the element to which they belong.
