on organization of content
I find that it's good to walk away from what I'm working on and think from time to time. At work, that means a little trip to the loading dock.
On my most recent trips I was pondering how to organize my site. It occurred to me that I have a few hang-ups. I have stupid stuff that I like to publish. I have unrelated things that I like to publish. And the only thing that those unrelated things have in common is that they unrelated not only to the site, but to each other. That's a bear to tie-in to a focused site.
But then, what is this blog other than a collection of whatever is on my mind? Granted, some things relate, others don't. For example, I have many entries about javascript that relate, and then I have an entry about a mailbox that is begging to be whacked with a five iron. Indeed, this blog is one of those unrelated things, but at the same the blog format has provided me with inspiration of organization.
Doesn't it make sense to have an entry on the home page? Even if it doesn't change much? I think it does. Why not have a special category for that? It can be a log of updates or whatever else.
And about all that other silly stuff... wouldn't it work just as well to have them as separate entries in this blog?
So that's my current line of thought. I think I'm going to expand this humble blog into a greater CMS highly specialized to what I will use it for. I should be able to effectively remove 'blog' from the organizational schema; because I can file it all under "more" or "misc" or whatever. I can classify certain entries to act as content on certain pages, and I think it'll all fall into place.
Add to the mix some fun multiview action, and it should all fall into place. But I need to put it on paper first just to be sure. I think it's a simple and probably standard idea, but it's new to me, so I'm intrigued at the whole thing.

One thing to think about from the start
Something I overlooked and wished I hadn't. Consider that some articles will fit into multiple categorizations. Plan for this up front, even if you don't see much need for it now, you'll definitely see it later...
