pennypacker.net: Rhode Islanders memorize trivial stuff

Rhode Islanders memorize trivial stuff

Since I've been living in Rhode Island I've discovered that the locals have more than a few quirks. Books have been written on it, in fact, and since I'm not writing any books this afternoon, I'll write about one thing.

Rhode Islanders, and I mean all of them (probably), have their driver's license number committed to memory. I'm serious. If you meet a Rhode Islander, ask him. I find this behavior odd to say the very least. I don't know my license number, I usually don't even know my license plate number, and I certainly don't know anyone's phone number now that my phone has a built-in memory. My wife's number is press and hold 2.

What's most peculiar is how Rhode Islanders stare at you in shock and disbelief when they realize you haven't memorized your license number. I never know how to respond to that look. It seems that not knowing your license number is just so absurd that you have no legitimate reason for not having memorized it. It's like someone saying what's 2+2 and you pausing to think. It's inconceivable.

I had to get that out. My license number has a 9 in it. I think it has two 9s in it and either a 4 before or after the nines... yeah... after them. And that's about all I know. I must stand out like a sore thumb in RI.
