Safari has been working out

No sooner do I load up Safari with extra goodness as described in my last entry does Apple bump up Safari with a new Web Core.

Safari 1.3 now does more. The first thing that it does is break all the SIMBL plug-ins that I had last mentioned. But moving past that for a moment, it also adds a Javascript console (Cmd-Shift-J) that reports some somewhat useful information. It's also available in the Debug menu if you prefer not to use the Command Key.

Also, there's an option for "Use Transparent Menu" which doesn't appear to do much more than eliminate the drop shadow from around a window. It also makes the content, scroll bars, and status bar disappear momentarily as you go to load a new page. I suspect that this will be better supported in Tiger, and it may be a developer's tool for testing Dashboard widgets.

It also makes Javascript run a whole heck of a lot faster, though it still appears to have trouble running concurrent loops. The tide is turning, and Safari is really stepping up to be a fine developer's browser. For the first time, I'm actually excited about the upcoming update to Mac OS X.

Another (somewhat) useful tip

You can use unicode characters for toolbar folder names. For example, you can use the little Apple logo to name a folder of apple links. Anything that you can find in a font via unicode you can put in the toolbar - saves a ton of room.

One drawback though is that if you click on an RSS feed Safari will capture it and do nothing with it. It won't let the rss:// event be passed onto apps like net news wire. I haven't tested this one but I have heard of the problem.

I was rather upset that it broker SIMBL plugins - I miss my Growl notifications.
