Weather Channel Jamz

My wife has gotten me into the habit of checking the Weather Channel in the mornings, and I've grown fond of the "Local on the 8s" segment. Apart from actually appreciating knowledge of the forecast, it seems that some of the muzac that they play is pretty groovy. Not all of it, mind you, but if I had to estimate, I'd say that better than half of it keeps my interest. It actually gets a little groove going in the two minutes or so that it plays. The jazzy piano, the moody bass, even the retro guitar sound -- it's a guilty pleasure.

Pinewood Derby Closure

We all love closure. Well, I love closure anyway. I was just informed by my sister-in-law that my nephew's car for his Pinewood Derby was voted by the other scouts as "Most original car." This makes me grin.

It's especially good news after hearing the results read on race day and not once hearing his name called as a winner. But wait, there's more! His car actually won second place! He was tied with another scout for second, and I guess there was just an over-sight on race day that left his name off of the winner's list.

The Pinewood Derby

Today was my nephew's pinewood derby. There was some fierce competition out there. He lost one race that I know of, but he didn't even place. Perhaps he lost a second when I wasn't paying attention, or perhaps I just wasn't paying attention. Either way, it was great fun.

The car to watch was the blue hammerhead shark car. My newphew, LT, drew his design on paper, and I hacked it out with a Dremel. He then finished the car with my brother-in-law with a two-tone coat of paint, a lot of extra weight for speed, and nicely sanded down axles. It wasn't fast enough, however, for the silver Mustang Fastback that his friend brought to the competition. That car won every race and it was seldom close.

I can't say that I didn't see it coming

I knew it. I knew that once I started this blog thing, I'd be hard-pressed to keep it current and well updated. And it's not that I don't want to, it's that I'm an over zealous editor. I think of things to write about, then I think to myself, "Why bother? honestly, John, no one cares that your truck was slow to start this morning." And so, I scrounge around for something marginally interesting or entertaining to write about.

Inevitably, having nothing terribly new and exciting to write about, save my truck's reluctance to start this morning, I skip entries. I know I ought not skip entries, but alas, I do. And I believe I hinted towards something similar to this in my very first entry.

A mystery package

I got a little FedEx Door Tag. It was left on my door today while I was at work. It says that a package has been sent to me, but I must sign to receive it. Could it be the hard drive case that I ordered? It's mighty fancy, and I am eager to receive it. But, the web store that I purchased it from says that my order is still pending. Though, they don't always update the order status. I don't know how it is meant to be shipped either, because there is only one option for shipping which is cleverly named "shipping." So, it might come FedEx, it could arrive via swallow, who knows. But how would a swallow grip it?
